Since its formation in 1987, RPM Transportation Consultants has established a strong leadership role in the transportation consulting field. The firm has completed hundreds of traffic engineering, planning and parking studies and has extensive experience in traffic signal design and operations. Major projects that RPM has successfully undertaken include the Nashville Arena, the Country Music Hall of Fame, the Downtown Nashville Transportation Plan, the 21st Avenue Transportation Plan, the Vanderbilt University Medical Center Parking Study, the Subarea 9 Master Plan for downtown Nashville, and Metro Nashville's Strategic Plan for Sidewalks & Bikeways. Pedestrian and bicycle planning and design projects have become an area of focus for RPM, which has completed many such projects in Tennessee. Also, RPM has produced major traffic signal system studies and designs for Brentwood, Franklin, Cookeville, Lebanon, Tullahoma, and Red Bank, Tennessee.

RPM Transportation Consultants has established a reputation for developing innovative and creative solutions to traffic problems. The firm routinely conducts research of best practices in other communities around the world. In the early planning stages of projects, the RPM staff evaluates these best practices to determine possible approaches to unusual problems or issues. The firm then applies the appropriate solutions to the project. For example, in 1995, RPM developed a residential traffic control policy for the City of Brentwood that resulted in the installation of the first speed humps used in Middle Tennessee to control traffic speeds and cut-through traffic in neighborhoods. Subsequently, RPM helped develop the Neighborhood Traffic Management Pilot Program for Metro Nashville which is guiding the city's first traffic calming efforts. Also, RPM was part of the consultant team that planned and designed the Music Row Roundabout, which was the first modern roundabout constructed in the Nashville area.

On numerous projects, the firm has utilized their expertise in bicycle and pedestrian design to identify innovative multi-modal solutions that achieve a balance between pedestrian, bicycle and motor vehicle transportation. Notable projects where this approach has been applied are the 21st Avenue Transportation Plan, the Bikeway Plan for Franklin, the Brentwood 2020 Comprehensive Plan, the Subarea 9 Plan for downtown Nashville, the Nashville Pilot Bikeway Project, and the Lebanon, Mount Juliet & Wilson County Bicycle Plan. RPM Transportation Consultants also produced Metro Nashville's Strategic Plan for Sidewalks & Bikeways, which is the first such comprehensive plan in the state of Tennessee.

One of RPM Transportation Consultants' strengths is its ability to effectively convey complex traffic and land use issues to public audiences. The RPM staff has extensive experience in conducting public hearings, charettes and making presentations for land use and transportation projects. On many projects, RPM incorporates an interactive public involvement process into their scope of work. This approach is used to generate ideas, address concerns, and ensure public involvement in land use and transportation decisions.
